Detect Magic (Disregard—no longer relevant in 5e)
If used on an item that your character is able to use or if you make a successful Use Magic Device roll, Detect Magic will allow you to tell roughly how charged up an item is, even if you don’t yet know exactly what it does. For instance, you would be able to tell that a wand has about half of it’s original 50 charges remaining though you wouldn’t necessarily know that it’s a wand of Sleep.
The material component is not diamond dust. Instead, it is a heart taken from someone of the same race as the deceased. The heart has to be fresher than the death of the beneficiary of the spell. That means the heart donor had to have died more recently. The person who killed the donor must be present for the casting of the spell.
